Trolls 101

The obnoxious characters who haunt usenet groups, forums and, yes, blogs. The ones who seek to provoke reaction for its own sake, who rant, who are not amenable to logic, who seem desperate for attention of any kind. The ones who make your seriously consider shutting off comments.

Care to share your experiences, and what you learned from them? Perhaps you could let us know what you think are the best ways to handle these people?

Comments open. Unmoderated for now. :)

Hey Pete, this sounds sort of like ... me.

Apart from that, best way to handle them? Ignore them.

Ignorance is bliss - it surely is when it comes to trolls. But trolls can often be upsetting even if you delete them. half the problem has been solved by Blogger's introduction of comment moderation. if anyone is still troubled he needs to move to wordpress, preferably on his own domain name and server. gives you a better control over your blog especially when it comes to comments. You get to know the IP address of the person who commented. The system I have is that if your comment is approved once, comments from your IP do not fall in moderation but get approved automatically.

How about flaming 'em back?? :)

I quite enjoy it when trolls come a-visitin'. But then there are people who think I'm a troll so...no wonder.

I've often come across these trolls who in no matter whatsoever comment on the topic under conversation. Instead, they'll just leave the message, "Check out my latest post..."

I wonder whether linking upto your blog has become an exercise in advertising itself! As for the trolls, they need to be under moderate scrutiny, I feel.

But I wonder (and I'm thyinking aloud here).. if a troll or a wannabe troll makes a comment that sounds suspiciously like a criminal act or an intention to commit a criminal act... can we still stay neutral and just ignore?

Yeah!! how bout phlegming me back .. and whistler's mum while you're at it. Woot woot !!

The internet's a noisy place. By definition, you have to seek attention (to whatever extent) in order to attract even a small crowd. The Unhinged Rant is, therefore, a blog and message board staple.

That's the first bit. Coming to trolls, well, if you've really run out of arguments, you'll be resorting to abuse, won't you? And what better place to do that than the interwebs, where nobody's going to smash a pint glass in your face when you start shooting off?
